Following its inception in 1987, the company expanded at a rapid pace by catering to value-oriented shoppers. Its chain peaked at more than 70 stores before Megafoods filed for Chapter 11 protection from its creditors. The grocer was struggling to emerge from bankruptcy going into the mid-1990s.
